What You Need To Know

Everyone loves the smell of brownies straight out of the oven. But is it possible to have fresh-baked brownies delivered right to your mailbox? Here in the test kitchen, we tasted brownies from eight leading mail-order gourmet bakers. We ordered brownie assortments and rated the basic brownie from each company on sweetness, chocolate flavor, and density. In addition, we sampled the more unusual flavors in each assortment—including inventive varieties made with chiles, fleur de sel, and crystallized ginger. Some of the brownies were a revelation, others merely good.

Ordering our brownie assortments was simple. All of the websites were easy to navigate, and all of the brownies arrived when promised. Upon opening the packages, we discovered that each company’s brownies arrived in good condition except one, whose brownies were slightly crumbly.
